Book Review: Pomegranates and Promises by Sav R. Miller

“'You used to call Kal Hades incarnate,' I say over my shoulder, pausing with one foot out the door. 'I get it now. You wanted him to be the villain in your story, so you dressed him up as one. Painted him as a monster, when really, all he ever wanted was a little bit of unconditional love.' 'I used to want that from you, too.' I adjust a couple of the finer points, adding in more incriminating evidence, and push send. 'But then I realized, monsters aren’t capable of returning love. And the longer you spend chasing it from someone who cannot ever give it back, the more of a monster you become in turn.'”

Promises and Pomegranates (Monsters & Muses, #1) is not a book for the faint of heart. This book contains frequent scenes of graphic violence.

This book took me a couple of days to read and digest, as well as to come up with a good review for.

As one of the most recommended books to me by friends and strangers alike, I really expected more.

Don't get me wrong, it's a perfectly fine book and story. There is a semi decent plot (as in, its not hard to follow), good character development (for some of the characters), and lots of steamy scenes.

But overall, this book was just... okay.

I enjoyed watching MMC Kal develop throughout this story, as we get to learn more of his backstory and why he's such a sullen man determined to be miserable. Eventually we get to see a truer side of him, an ultimately more vulnerable side at that.

FMC Elena on the other hand, was rather lacking, especially in the sense of character development. There's no real sense of who she is as a person, other than she was born into the mafia, and was almost forced into one marriage, and then actually forced into another.

If you're planning to read this because it's inspired by the story of Persephone and Hades, don't get your hopes up. The plot has so much potential, but just didn't quite reach the expectations so many of us readers had.

As always, never let a review sway your interest in a book. Some of my favorite reads have been 3 star or lower ratings. This is just one persons' opinion, so I encourage everyone to continue exploring their interests and developing their own opinions!

Happy Reading!
